Free-range chickens on the farm at the centre of the latest avian flu alert have been infected with the disease for three weeks, The Times has learnt.
The birds were treated with antibiotics. The owner, however raised the alarm on Monday when 10 percent of his 25,000 flock were found dead. Only then was avian flu suspected.
Government vets are now urgently checking poultry in the neighborhood to ascertain whether the disease has already spread to other farms.
The risks of H7 [strain] to human health are low, unlike the deadly H5N1 strain of bird flu virus.
